The Octave and Semitone options are added together.

For example, if I play C3 on the keyboard and set the Octave to 1, the note I hear will now be a C4. The Octave and Semitone buttons will determine the oscillator’s pitch in relation to the note that is being played. Reset, however, will cause the oscillator to play from the same position every time a note is played making each note sound the same. If you’re looking to create sounds that feel like they’re played by a person rather than a machine, these are the options to try. Random and Flow will give a slight variation to each note by playing from different positions in the waveform. Hive’s Phase options determine how the oscillator will play when a note is pressed. On other synthesizers, you may find that the Detune knob will allow you to tune in both directions. If there is only one wave playing, the Detune knob on oscillator 1 will tune the oscillator upwards (sharpen) to a maximum of one semitone whereas the control on oscillator 2 will detune downwards. Examples can be found in lead lines, particularly in trance music. The result is that a big, wide sound can be made with just one oscillator. Hive also has a Width control which will spread the waveforms out on the stereo field. Initially, the effect is just that the sound gets louder but by using the Detune knob, the pitch of each wave form will begin to detune away from the original pitch. This is done by clicking the number to the left of where it says Unison. Hive allows for up to sixteen waves to be stacked up.

They are selected by clicking the picture of the wave to the left of where it says Wave.Īn oscillator can only generate one type of wave shape at a time, however, some subtractive sythesizers include the ability to multiply the number of waves generated. Hive has all of these and some additional shapes. The most common waveforms on a subtractive synthesizer are sine, sawtooth, square and triangle. It is usual to find several waveforms on an oscillator, each with it’s own unique sonic characteristics. In synthesis, the oscillators are the modules that generate the audible waves. There are many other types of synthesis methods but subtractive synthesis is the easiest to understand when starting out. Most subtractive synthesizers use faders, knobs and buttons as control methods and you will immediately be able to hear the result of your tweaking. Thankfully, you don’t need to know any maths to start making synthesized sounds. In Subtractive synthesis, the sound from the oscillator is sent to a filter which removes parts of the sound in order to shape it into something you can use. The module that generates the waveform is called an oscillator. Subtractive synthesis and U-He Hiveįirst, let’s talk about what synthesis is.Ī one sentence explanation is that synthesis is when an audible waveform is mathematically generated in either hardware or software. Instead, I will be talking about subtractive synthesis, breaking down the modules common to most subtractive synthesizers and explaining how they work together to form your finished sound.

There are many tutorials available which will teach you how to make a specific sound. Are they long or short sounds, in your face or gentle etc. When listening to music, think about the properties of the instruments being used.

With that in mind, it’s important to develop your analytical skills to help you craft your sounds. From rumbling basses to soaring sweeps, effects, leads and even drums and percussion, it’s really up to you what kind of sound you’re going to create. If you’ve gone through the preset banks on your synth or DAW, you will no doubt have found that a synthesizer can produce a huge variety of sounds. Making your own sounds from the ground up can be highly rewarding and can give your tracks and added sense of ownership. This is when it’s time to start learning synthesis. At some point in many people’s music making career, using preset sounds starts to lose it’s appeal.
